Education & schools
On this page there is information about education and schooling for all ages as well as access to related support organisations for the local area. Information about local pre-school facilities is on the Child Care page.
The most common path for formal education in the area is to attend a neighbourhood first school, progress at age 10 to Rydon Community College (intermediate school) and then on to Steyning Grammar School at 13. There are other possible paths which could, for instance, include the Weald Community School and Sixth Form, Billingshurst for secondary education.
The local first schools together with Rydon Community College and Steyning Grammar School belong to a cluster group of schools called STARS [Storrington Area Rural Schools]. The Storrington Area Rural Schools (STARS) work collaboratively to ensure best practice and a common approach is in place.
The STARS Locality of Schools are:
- Amberley CE First School
- Ashington CE First School
- Rydon Community College
- Steyning Grammar School
- St Mary’s CE First School, Washington
- Storrington First School
- Thakeham First School
- West Chiltington Community School.
There are excellent links between these schools. The STARS Headteachers, curriculum subject leaders and year 5 and 6 teachers regularly meet to arrange and coordinate transfer events as well as activities for the pupils. Examples of this include cross phase units of work in literacy and numeracy, sports galas, enrichment days for able pupils, a history day and in-service days providing professional development opportunities for both teachers and teaching assistants.
Please note that the local primary and secondary school system is undergoing a reorganisation which will take effect from 1st September 2017. You can find out more about this on the West Sussex County Council website: Planning STARS schools for the future
In the next section of the page you will find the information provided by government and other agencies to help you select appropriate facilities and services.
Below that is a directory of local schools and colleges.
