‘ACCENTS ON THE LANDSCAPE’
Ancient Churches of West Sussex
– watercolours by Gordon Rushmer

As part of the celebrations for Horsham Year of Culture, Parham will be hosting a Watercolour Exhibition on local painter, Gordon Rushmer on 1- 15 September. An award-winning landscape painter, Rushmer’s work has been exhibited in collections at Tate Britain, the Imperial War Museum, The National Library of Wales and more.

In a painting career spanning fifty years Gordon has displayed a great diversity of interests and skills. Producing archaeological reconstructions, glassware designs, limited edition prints and landscape paintings of his beloved South Country.

With works in major national collections he has been described by one art critic as a contemporary English artist whose simple compositional elements and nostalgic pastoral scenery convey a comforting sense of calm.

This open welcoming style is a fascinating contrast to the graphic, disturbing images that he has created during fifteen years on call as a war artist with the Royal Marines and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, recording firsthand the ravages of conflict in Bosnia, Eritrea, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2013 he was winner of the Rowland Hilder Award from the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours for one of his Afghanistan war paintings. Since then he has returned to exploring his home surroundings and with this exhibition of some of his favourite churches, is proud to be part of the Horsham Year of Culture.

Not only are there buildings but also landscapes, wall paintings, monuments, interiors and details that have taken Gordon’s eye.
