Fire & Rescue Service “Have a Go Day” @ Storrington Fire Station
Jan 29 @ 11:00 am – 2:30 pm
Fire Service Boots
Could you fill these boots?

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s ‘Have a Go Day’ on Sunday 29th January will give people in Horsham District the opportunity to find out what a future career as a retained (part time) firefighter can offer.

The event will run from 11am-2.30pm at Storrington Fire Station on School Hill, it is completely free to attend and open to anyone aged 18 and over. We are recruiting for retained firefighters at Storrington, Partridge Green, Henfield, Billingshurst and Horsham, so if you live or work in these areas please join us.

There will be a range of activities available on the day, including: wearing breathing apparatus, practising hose runs, attempting a vertigo test and checking fitness levels. Local firefighters will be available to offer more information on the physical and written recruitment tests and provide tours around the fire station. A mini bus will be running to and from Chanctonbury Leisure Centre for anyone that would like to have a go at the shuttle run fitness test (a key component of the recruitment process).

Our ‘Have a Go Day’ is all about reaching men or women in our communities who may not yet have considered becoming a retained firefighter. The role offers people a fantastic opportunity to give something back to their community, while getting paid to do it.

The day will be very relaxed, informal and completely commitment-free. None of the activities are compulsory; we would enjoy meeting anyone who would simply like to come and find out more about their local fire service.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone onto the station on Sunday. So if you’re up for a challenge, why not come along and have a go.

Retained firefighters are members of the community living within four minutes of a fire station. They combine normal day jobs with being “on call” for the fire service, prepared to respond to incidents when needed.

They receive regular training to provide them with the ability to deal with fires, road traffic collisions and a wide range of community engagement activities. Retained recruits receive an annual retaining fee and additional payments for any incidents or community safety events that they attend.

To book a place please email richard.davy@westsussex.gov.uk or just come along on the day. We ask that everyone wears trainers and clothing appropriate for taking part in the firefighting activities.

Future Plans

We go in to the next phase of our Higher Level Stewardship scheme, in which we will look to expand the heathland element of both Warren Hill and Sullington Warren, and to change the age structure of the heather on Sullington Warren to make it more resilient to environmental threats such as the heather beetle.

We will continue to graze Old Washington Common and the Rough Land with Belted Galloway cattle and with sheep. Via the path network we will create stronger links between Warren Hill and Sullington Warren.
