“Writing for Children – Then and Now”
A Talk by Jill Atkins
February 2nd at 2.30 p.m. at Storrington Museum,
Old School, School Lane, Storrington RH20 4LL.
Jill Atkins, Membership Secretary of the Museum, has been writing for children for thirty years. Her talk is about her life as a writer, how writing for children differs from writing for adults – and contrary to some people’s belief, it isn’t easier!
The talk is about getting published; the successes that go with the failures; the processes – editing, illustration. Her books range from historical fiction to workbooks on spelling and phonics, from fiction to non-fiction, from teenage novels to early readers based on phonic teaching in schools.
Then – Jill began telling stories to her two younger brothers when she was quite a young girl and she always loved writing stories at school. Later, while she was teaching infants in Ware, Hertfordshire, she realised that the ‘reading books’ the children in her class were expected to read were very dull so she decided to write her own. These didn’t get published, but were a useful tool in the classroom!
Having escaped from teaching, she ran a Bed and Breakfast establishment with Dave, her husband, and this gave her more time to write. Actually, belonging to a writers’ group with all other members concentrating on adult fiction at that time, Jill’s first four published works were romantic novels, which are still in large print today! The breakthrough came with her first children’s book: “Cooking with Rabbit”!
Now – Two hundred books later, Jill is still writing.
Venue: Old School, School Lane, Storrington RH20 4LL.
Members £6. Non Members £8. All welcome
Teas & Coffees will be available after the talk.

“Life above the Tunnel”
A Talk by David Porter
April 2nd at 2.30 p.m. at Storrington Museum,
Old School, School Lane, Storrington RH20 4LL.
David has lived at the Clayton Tunnel North Portal, which is 7 miles outside Brighton, since 2003. After clearing the land of decades of rubbish and cutting back the rampant vegetation that seeks to overcome the cottage, he has sought to bring the story of this unique building to the attention of a wider audience through talks and the occasional tour.
David is an experienced public speaker and, during his day job, works as a freelance fraud investigator. In this talk he explains this Gothic folly’s historic origins and features a bold Victorian architect, plucky railway families, all manner of flora and fauna, railway disasters, secret passages and a few ghosts.
Venue: Old School, School Lane, Storrington RH20 4LL.
Members £6. Non Members £8. All welcome
Teas & Coffees will be available after the talk.
