“Sussex Green Living”
A Talk by Carrie Cort – CEO of Sussex Green Living
Sussex Green Living is a fast growing, multi-award environmental awareness and education charity. With the help of volunteers, they run the Sussex Green Hub, the Horsham Repair Café, Sussex Green Ideas and their Youth Eco Forum. Green living is a hot topic, so come and hear their aims, activities and lessons we can all use.
Carrie Cort set up Sussex Green Living out of concern for the way we humans are treating the planet which sustains us: with motherhood in 2008 came concern about environmental sustainability and a burning desire to learn how we can live more environmentally friendly lifestyles, in harmony with nature.
She has always had a passion for the countryside, animals and the natural environment. Most of her career has been spent in marketing and communications, mainly within education and the land based industries, latterly using the power of video communications. In an effort to help create a climate for change, she decided to use her knowledge and digital skills to share ideas which anyone can adopt, saving money and the planet.
She says she is not an expert, just an ordinary person who is on a greening journey and wanting to pass on what she’s learnt to others. Let’s all make some simple changes, become more resilient and try to lead simpler, less materialistic and consumerist way of life.
All welcome
“50 Years of Seaside Entertaining”
A Talk by Brian Freeland
Seaside holidays started with King George III: seaside entertainment started with donkey rides and Punch & Judy, developed through the Minstrels and the Pierrots to the Concert Parties, and ended with cheap foreign holidays and colour television.
Was any holiday complete without a visit to the summer show or concert party? The very names conjure up the period – Sandy Powell’s Startime; Cyril Fletcher’s Summer Masquerade; Hedley Claxton’s Gaytime; The Fol-de-Rols and Clarkson Rose’s Twinkle. Clarkie and his partner Olive Fox presented their first Twinkle on Ryde Pier in 1921. Over the following 47 years Twinkle had resident summer seasons, with tours in the spring and autumn. In the winter months Clarkie was one of our busiest and best-loved pantomime dames.
THE STORY OF TWINKLE IS VERY MUCH THE STORY OF BRITISH SEASIDE ENTERTAINMENT DURING THAT PERIOD. Clarkson Rose joined his first Pierrot show in Sussex in 1914, and staged his last TWINKLE season in Devon in 1967.
50 YEARS OF SEASIDE ENTERTAINMENT is a ‘solo performance’ with costumes and props, some songs and a dance.
Brian Freeland is a Speaker, Playwright and Author. Brian’s theatre career started in 1959, direct from National Service, and has taken him to forty-three different countries including three residencies in the Middle East, eight tours of the Indian sub-continent and two circumnavigations of the globe. He has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, Scottish Opera, Sadler’s Wells and London Festival Ballet Companies, Nottingham Playhouse, Manchester Library Theatre and Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop Company. Approaching retirement he started to ‘branch out’ – directing, writing scripts and giving Talks.

THE INSPECTOR CALLS: Confessions of a Police Speaker !
A talk by Neil Sadler.
This talk draws on the curious, poignant and sometimes downright funny things Neil has been told while giving talks about his 30 year police career. This talk complements the recently published book of the same title.
“What did you want to do when you grew up?”
Why was Neil under suspicion as an IRA bomber in the 1970s ?
The Grand Hotel bombing 1984 – and why one guest asked for a reduction in his bill !
A very peculiar request at a Women’s Institute meeting !
“Which was your most memorable shift?”
And many more interesting incidents, often stranger than fiction!
Neil Sadler trained as a school teacher and worked on the Isle of Man before returning to England for a very brief spell as a civil servant based in Bristol. In 1978 he decided that an office based job was not for him and he joined Sussex Police.
He spent much of his 30 year’s service as an operational officer in various ranks across Sussex, working briefly in Hong Kong, Trinidad and Abu Dhabi….he even survived Bognor Regis, Haywards Heath and Crawley!
Following retirement in 2008, he now offers his talks to groups and organisations throughout Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and south London.
