Storrington Museum Talk “I NEVER KNEW GEOGRAPHY WOULD BE SO RELEVANT” @ The Old School
May 7 @ 7:30 pm

Storrington & District Museum I NEVER KNEW GEOGRAPHY WOULD BE SO RELEVANT! Talk May 2024 Poster

“I NEVER KNEW GEOGRAPHY WOULD BE SO RELEVANT; WHY DIDN’T I CONCENTRATE MORE AT SCHOOL”

A Talk by William Avenell

An amusing look at how geography impinges on our everyday life .For example, why do motorway traffic jams suddenly disappear ?
The talk has plenty of good-natured humour and demonstrates some insightful local knowledge. Bill Avenell has a passion for unusual features in the landscape. He is a specialist in topography and taught geography at a public school. Most of us were taught geography at school, but not topography, which is a field of geoscience, studying forms and features of land surfaces.
Bill will explain the impact that physical geography has made on our daily lives.

May 7th 7.30 p.m. at Storrington Museum,

Venue: Old School, School Lane, Storrington RH20 4LL.

Members £6. Non Members £8. All welcome

Teas & Coffees will be available after the talk.

Storrington Museum Open Day “A History of Church Street, Storrington” @ The Old School
Jun 1 @ 10:30 am – 4:00 pm

a view of church street in Storrington

“A History of Church Street, Storrington”

Open Day, Storrington Museum

June 1st 10.30-4.00 p.m. at Storrington Museum,
Old School, School Lane, Storrington RH20 4LL.

Do YOU or any family/relatives have any information on Church Street house history or information and/or photos of who lived there and what they did? We need information for our forthcoming Museum Open Day!

The Storrington Local History Group in conjunction with Storrington Museum are starting a project to look at the history of Church Street. When were the houses built? Who lived there? What were the shops in Church Street?

To do this, we are researching using the 1788 Bainbridge map and Apportionment, the 1841 Tithe Map and Apportionment, the Censuses (1841-1921), the 1910 (Lloyd George) Valuation and the 1939 Register as well as Sussex Directories and local newspapers. The Museum also has an unrivalled collection of photographs of the street.

The research is not as straightforward as first thought as the Censuses often do not indicate house numbers or names nor indeed did the Enumerators go house by house sequentially (rather it seems they dodged around depending on who was in). The Directories are similar – no house names or numbers.

Apart from Forge House, the West Sussex Records Office has no detailed records of the houses or trades conducted. We are therefore asking if YOU or any family/relatives have any information on Church Street house history or information and/or photos of who lived there and what they did.

The History Group are planning an Open Day at the Museum on 1st June to see what information or knowledge local residents have of the street, which they can contribute to the project. Please do come along; you will be able to see what we have found and what we need to discover.

Any assistance you can give would be most gratefully received.

With thanks
Local History Group
