National Garden Scheme
The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and raises impressive amounts of money for some of the UK’s best-loved nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.

Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors we have donated more than £70 million to our beneficiary charities, and in 2023 made donations of over £3.4 million. Founded in 1927 to support district nurses, we are now the most significant charitable funder of nursing in the UK and our beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The National Garden Scheme doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity – we are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. We fund projects which promote gardens and gardening as therapy, and in 2017, we launched our annual Gardens and Health Week to raise awareness of the topic. Our funding also supports the training of gardeners and offers respite to horticultural workers who have fallen on difficult times.

To learn more about the National Garden Scheme, discover your perfect garden or find out how to open your own garden, visit ngs.org.uk, download the National Garden Scheme app or purchase the National Garden Scheme’s Garden Visitor’s Handbook, which is published annually and available via ngs.org.uk/shop and at all good book retailers.

The croquet lawn is now a riot of humps and hollows, hosting almost 1000 species of plants.

Knepp Castle The Apple Store, nr Knepp Castle off Pound Lane, West Grinstead Horsham West Sussex RH13 8LJ is open for the National Garden Scheme on 1st June (10-4). Admission £15, children free. Pre-booking essential please visit www.ngs.org.uk. Tea.

Terrace at The Old Vicarage, Washington

The Old Vicarage Washington

https://findagarden.ngs.org.uk/garden/21793/the-old-vicarage

The 3½ acre garden at The Old Vicarage is set around an 1832 Regency house (not open) in the pretty village of Washington, West Sussex. As well as the stunning views looking towards the North Downs, enhanced by mature and various specimen trees, the garden has many pockets of interest. There is a Japanese garden with its waterfall, pond, bamboo and grasses, a further large water garden and numerous creatively planted herbaceous borders. A working kitchen garden has glasshouses, fruit cages, orchard and vegetables. The Italianate gazebo with green oak columns and lead roof offers a wonderfully comfortable place to sit and contemplate the beauty of this garden. Throughout, there are well placed seating areas to take in the stunning scenery. The treehouse is much loved by young and old alike, from here the nature viewing platform opens on to the woodland copse area which incorporates a stream and architectural stumpery. Everyone loves the topiary of characters who watch over the tennis court. In the spring there is an abundance of bulbs throughout: snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, fritillaria, camassia and bluebells. Whatever the weather, there is a haven in the conservatory where refreshments are available.

The Old Vicarage The Street Washington, Sussex RH20 4AS is open for the National Garden Scheme every Thursday 8th February to 10th October 2024 (10am-5pm) Admission £7, children free. Pre-book on the National Garden Scheme website https://findagarden.ngs.org.uk/garden/21793/the-old-vicarage.  Also open on other dates in April, May, June, August and by arrangement, see National Garden Scheme website for details. Self-service light refreshments, Picnics Welcome.

The National Garden Scheme
Founded in 1927 by the Queen’s Nursing Institute to raise funds for community nursing means that gardens, health and community are at the heart of what we do at the National Garden Scheme. Every ticket bought, every garden visited, and every cake and cup of tea savoured translates into millions of pounds in donations not only to some of the UK’s best loved nursing and health charities but to garden charities and community projects too.

In 2022 we made donations of 3.11 million. Beneficiaries include Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support and Parkinson’s UK.

Visit https://ngs.org.uk for more information about the work of the National Garden Scheme, to search for gardens opening in your area or to find out how to open your own garden for the National Garden Scheme.

Fittleworth House – National Garden Scheme, Open Day 2024 @ Fittleworth House
Jun 12 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

NGS Garden at Fittleworth House

The National Garden Scheme: Fittleworth House

https://findagarden.ngs.org.uk/garden/14546/fittleworth-house

Visit the stunning gardens at Fittleworth House, Pulborough and support National Garden Scheme charities.

Fittleworth House was built around 1720 from locally quarried stone as a home for the squire of the village. Currently the house (not open) is a full-time home and has been in the same family ownership for over fifty years. Its front is covered in a long-established Wisteria fronted by mixed flower beds. The three-acre garden contains both formal and informal areas with much emphasis on wildlife and habitat creation. Most of the garden sits on a gentle eastward facing slope which is manageable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The croquet lawn in front of the house is bordered on its southern edge by a magnificent Cedar of Lebanon and its northern edge by an imposing Holm Oak, both very tall and grand for their type and both planted around the 1740s. Near the Cedar sits a natural looking stream, built using locally quarried stone and planted with many shade and moisture loving plants. The garden then gently slopes down to the fountain garden with its mixed flower borders, topiary and globe fountain with an established Yew hedge as backdrop. An archway through the hedge then leads to a fully productive half acre walled garden and a romantic Apple tunnel. The vegetable beds are used to grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables for the house and staff. The long borders down the middle of the walled garden are planted each year with a mixture of beautiful Dahlias, annuals and vegetables for decorative effect. Just to the side of the walled garden is a smaller walled area where a large glasshouse and the potting sheds can be found. There is also a Spring garden and wildlife pond, large Rhododendrons and Camellias. The father and son garden team will be on hand to answer any questions.

Light refreshments. Visit the National Garden Scheme website to book online https://ngs.org.uk or pay on the day.

Visits also by arrangement 22 Apr to 23 Aug for groups of 8 to 40. Weekdays only. Please visit the National Garden Scheme website for more details.
