Girlguiding Chanctonbury District urges more people to volunteer

Girlguiding Chanctonbury District is calling on residents of the Ashington, Storrington, Thakeham, Washington and West Chiltington area to give some time to allow local girls and young women to enjoy a wide range of exciting activities, as well as acquire new skills and experiences themselves.

Girlguiding Chanctonbury District needs volunteers to give time to support their local groups. There are a huge number of opportunities to get involved in addition to working directly with groups such as helping with accounts, fundraising, becoming an occasional helper, participating in camps and running a one-off session to help earn a badge.

Locally our Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units are being challenged to discover the great outdoors through the Growing Up Wild initiative which encourages the girls and young women to investigate the outside world, get excited by nature and be involved in the world around them. The 1st Sullington Brownie unit have been completing the In the Woods badge. They’ve been out and about exploring at Fryern Park: tree hugging, bark rubbing, log walking, hunting for bugs and identifying the leaves of native trees. Not to mention toasting marshmallows in the campfire area!

Girlguiding has an ongoing campaign to seek out more adult members. The organisation is hugely popular, with more than half a million members and volunteers around the UK.

Emily and Anna, Brownies from West Chiltington said: “I think the best thing about Brownies is it is ALWAYS really FUN! I would like more adult helpers to join because we need more help to keep it awesome and go to more fun places!”

Rachel is a Brownie Leader in Storrington. She said: “Volunteering with Girlguiding gives me a huge sense of achievement when I think of how much the girls in my unit have grown in confidence in the time I’ve known them. It is very rewarding.”

Girlguiding offers a range of flexible volunteering opportunities to enable girls and young women to grow in confidence and discover their full potential in a safe, girl-only space.

Look out for the Girlguiding Chanctonbury District display in the window of the former Old Mill Travel shop next to Waitrose, Storrington.
