Today’s job market is very competitive; hiring is weak in entry-level jobs and across the wider market. Businesses refer to persistent skill shortages, higher employer costs and that candidates lack relevant experience.
So, standing out isn’t just about qualifications — it’s about showing initiative, adaptability, and real-world skills. Volunteering can offer all of that and more. By giving your time to a cause, you gain hands-on experience, along with developing transferable skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, and often get the chance to try roles you might not access in paid work.
Employers value candidates who demonstrate commitment, empathy, and a willingness to learn — qualities volunteering naturally develops. Plus, it shows you’re proactive and engaged, even between jobs. So, if you want to boost your CV, grow your confidence, and make a difference, volunteering could be the smartest career move you make this year.
Meet local volunteer organisations & find the opportunities
Like all our volunteer groups, the Storrington Community Partnership CIO has a variety of roles available, ranging from supporting our social media presence and building webpages to reviewing our pamphlets.
Come and chat with us to find out more!
A number of the local voluntary groups will be showcasing their group and the opportunities available at Storrington’s Volunteering Fair in Chanctonbury Leisure Centre on Saturday, 3rd October 2026, from 10am to 1pm.
It doesn’t matter what age you are or the skills you posses there is undoubtedly a role and a cause you feel you can support. Don’t forget, that a volunteer is not an employee, it doesn’t have to take over your life to be beneficial both to you and the cause. It is important to volunteer only the amount of time that feels comfortable to you. Volunteering should feel like a fun and rewarding hobby or a step in gaining new skills, but never a chore.
