Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why does this work have to take place?
A. The scheme originates from concerns raised regarding the number of road traffic collisions occurring on the A24/A283 Washington Roundabout. The northbound approach was also identified as a harsh braking site, with incidents occurring due to late lane changes. The planned improvements aim to reduce the occurrence of future incidents.
Q. What will the benefits be once it is finished?
A. The 30mph & 50mph speed limit, new visibility screens and roundabout lane markings should assist road users’ navigation through the junction and help to reduce the number of recorded injury collisions. The provision of visibility screens will discourage early decision-making and promote a new buffer to reduce heavy braking.
Q. Will any roads have to be closed during the works?
A. It is not intended to close the road but single lane operation with off peak temporary traffic signals on the A283 (between 5th Jan-9th Jan) and overnight lane closures on the A24 (between 12th Jan-13th Feb) on different sections ofthe A24 route will be in place over the duration of the works.
Q. What time of day will the work take place?
A. When working on the A283 works will be carried out off peak Mondays to Fridays between 09.30 and 16.00.
Works on the A24 will be carried out overnight.
Q. What disruption can motorists and bus passengers expect?
A. When temporary traffic signals are in place there will inevitably be some delays to traffic. The signals will only be in operation during off peak periods when works are taking place to minimise the disruption.
Lane closures on the A24 will be carried out overnight to avoid disruption to daytime traffic.
Q. What disruption can pedestrians and cyclists expect?
A. Pedestrian and cycle access will also be maintained and managed where appropriate.
Q. Will emergency services be affected by this work?
A. All emergency services will be informed of the works and access for emergency services will be maintained.
Q. Could weather impact the proposed works?
A. Weather conditions may have an impact on the delivery of the scheme and some delays may be caused by serious weather incidents.
