Wildlife doesn’t have a vote or a voice. Nonetheless it is an essential element in our world. Without it mankind will not be able to enjoy a worthwhile life, quite possibly we would not survive at all. We have voices and representatives in national and local government. It is up to us to make sure they understand the necessity to ensure our environment sustains and improves wildlife and biodiversity. It is not only the reduction of greenhouse gases, there is the urgent need to clear pollution from lakes, rivers and the sea. Plus the restoration of hedges and other wildlife corridors, the management of new development to include the planting of trees shrubs and flowers to attract birds and pollinating insects. This has been shown also to improve the general health and mental wellbeing of people.
Caring for wildlife is not just a tree-huggers whimsy which only benefits nature, it is vitally important for humankind. It is becoming increasingly clear that we need to co-operate with nature, not work against it or exploit it to extinction. Consider peat, formed from sphagnum moss, it is essential for the creation of important habitats as well as absorbing carbon. Just one example. From ants and worms to mighty oaks, all contribute to a healthy environment. Treasure them!

Our work party met at Hurston Warren SSSI on 27th June bashing bracken, and on 4th July at Cootham to carry out more Himalayan Balsam removal. Necessary at this time of the year before they spread their seeds. On 6th July saw more Balsam eradication at Hurston Warren. Our next Saturday work party is on 3rd August at 10am at Dyke Farm, raking hay and weeding the recently planted hedges. All designed to conserve native species. We are always happy to welcome like minded people to join us. Sharing transport where possible. There is usually time to enjoy the coffee break and a chat.
